3 Ways to Embrace the Energy of Winter

embrace hibernation
Winter is the season for deep rest. As the nights get longer take the extra darkness as an excuse to cozy up and embrace hibernation. After a long year it’s important to have a period of rest before blooming with the spring buds again. The end and the beginning of the year are usually very busy times for us and embracing hibernation will look different for everyone. For some it may be catching up on much needed sleep and for other it may be saying no to projects and outings. We’ve spent all year working hard on existing(the human experience is exhausting), so this is the time to just be.
Journal Prompt: What is one area of your life that you can practice complete hibernation in? Something that you can put to rest temporarily until the spring.
embrace death + rebirth
The once magnificently blooming flora and flauna are not afraid to shed their petals and die. They embrace it. The winter is a time of surrender and release, as time moves on the days get brighter and nature blooms again. There is nothing to fear. Embrace the cynical nature of the earth and use winter as the liminal space between the old and new. This is the time for dreaming and reflecting. Try journaling about what you want to leave behind and what you what to bring in. It will help you find closure about what is “dying” in your life and clarity about what is being “birthed”.

embrace dormancy and stillness
Rest and reflection > action and activity
Dormancy is the state of having normal physical functions suspended or slowed down for a period of time; deep sleep. Plants go dormant and wait to be renewed in the springtime. This halt in growth is vital for their survival. It is a defense mechanism that protects them from the harsher realities of winter; coldness and darkness. This is why they live in harmony with nature, why we consider them to be nature. They know to preserve energy, to embrace stillness and wait. I believe that the lesson to be learned is to honor natural cycles and to be contempt with doing less. Especially when that’s what everything else on earth is doing. Winter is a great time to practice meditation and learn what stillness means for you. It is the key to thriving in this ever changing world.
Journal Prompt: What is an area of life that you’ve been struggling to balance? How can embracing stillness help you find clarity?
Even though winter may be cold and dark, it is also a season of great potential and opportunity. By embracing the spiritual essence of winter, we can find renewal and growth in the midst of the winter blues.
